The Edgerunners 2 update for Cyberpunk 2077 officially introduced dual-wielding for pistols, but the modding community has already pushed the mechanic far beyond its intended scope. As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, several new mods allow players to dual-wield nearly any firearm in the game, including shotguns, assault rifles, and sniper rifles.
New Mod Options for Night City
Within 24 hours of the update’s release, multiple modders launched tools to expand the game’s dual-wielding tags. Notable releases include “Dual Wield Anything” by E3roKK, “Dual Wield Anything and Everything for 2.5” by Jollywankers, and “Expanded Dual Wielding” by JericoHellden.
Beyond simply allowing larger weapons, these mods introduce different gameplay tweaks. JericoHellden’s mod provides the option to control each firearm independently, moving away from the default behavior where the game automatically alternates fire between the two weapons. For players who prefer to stick to pistols but want more control, the “Independent Pistol Controls (Dual Wielding)” mod by Dederara offers a solution for separate firing inputs.
Technical Requirements and Limitations
Players looking to utilize these mods should be prepared for some technical friction. All the aforementioned mods require the latest version of Cyber Engine Tweaks to function, and the “Expanded Dual Wielding” mod additionally requires Redscript.
Modders have been upfront about the limitations of these unofficial additions. Both E3roKK and JericoHellden have noted that the experience can be “janky and wildly overpowered,” with animations appearing “clippy or awkward” during combat. Furthermore, melee weapons like katanas remain difficult to implement for dual-wielding, with current attempts treated more as experimental afterthoughts than fully realized features.
Why it matters
For players, these mods fundamentally change the balance of Cyberpunk 2077. Because the game’s difficulty is balanced around the official, limited implementation of dual-wielding, using rifles or shotguns in both hands significantly reduces the game’s challenge, as enemies are not scaled to match the increased firepower.
If you choose to experiment with these mods, expect a chaotic, high-damage experience that prioritizes player freedom over the developer-intended combat flow. While these mods offer a fun way to experiment with new playstyles, keep in mind that performance stability and animation quality may suffer compared to the official pistol dual-wielding mechanic.
