Dragon Ranger Gaming kicked off their VCT Threshold China campaign with a decisive 2-0 sweep against Rare Atom on the opening day of the tournament. As reported by Esports Insider, this victory serves as a critical step for the team as they look to secure a guest spot for the 2027 VCT China season. The event, which is being hosted at THE HUB Performing Arts Center, runs until 1 November and represents a shift in the local ecosystem as Valorant Challengers has given way to the Threshold series to conclude the Nationals season.

The path to redemption

The match, which began at 12:00 UK time, saw Dragon Ranger Gaming overcome significant statistical odds. Rare Atom entered the series with a higher Elo rating of 1622 and a rank of 74, boasting a 22-11 record. Conversely, Dragon Ranger Gaming held a rating of 1461, ranking 208th with a 49-54 historical record. Despite this, Dragon Ranger Gaming dominated the best-of-three series. Rare Atom selected Summit in the veto, while Dragon Ranger Gaming countered by picking Lotus. The series concluded in two maps, with Summit taking 46 minutes and Lotus taking 48, rendering the decider map of Sunset unnecessary.

This victory provides a much-needed momentum shift for Dragon Ranger Gaming following a difficult stretch of recent play. The team entered the tournament following a 0-2 loss to Any Questions Gaming in the China Evolution Series Act 3 2026, and 1-2 losses to both Trace Esports and TEC Esports during VCT China Stage 2 2026. This win also marks a continuation of their success against Rare Atom, repeating a 3-0 victory they secured at VCT Ascension China on 19 October 2025.

The Week 1 bracket features five VCT China teams and seven national teams competing in a single-elimination format. With the Week 1 final scheduled for 25 October, Dragon Ranger Gaming is now set to face FunPlus Phoenix on 23 October. Other opening-round matches saw similar results, with sweeps for Unsettled Resentment, Any Questions Gaming, and Wolves Esports.

Why it matters

For Dragon Ranger Gaming, the stakes at VCT Threshold China are immense. After losing their previous VCT China guest slot and failing to secure one of the eight partner team spots for the 2027-2028 cycle, this tournament serves as the primary gateway back into the top tier of professional Valorant. The new VCT China structure will feature only eight partner teams, two visitor teams, and two teams from the Open Qualifier, significantly limiting pathing into the league. Four organizations lost their partner status ahead of this cycle, including FunPlus Phoenix, Nova Esports, Titan Esports Club, and Wolves Esports. While Rare Atom was defeated in the opening round, they are not yet eliminated; the tournament structure allows week one losers to drop into a second-week playoff bracket starting 27 October, where they will be joined by one additional national team.
