Electronic Arts is undergoing a significant transformation just two months after its $55 billion buyout, resulting in a wave of layoffs and a complete shift in its development priorities. According to reporting from Kotaku, the publisher is cutting 400 jobs as part of a strategy to reduce costs and pivot its focus toward new business models.

In a joint email to staff, chief studios officer Cam Weber and chief operating officer David Tinson outlined the company’s new “strategic priorities.” These include a focus on growing EA’s presence in Asian markets, developing new ways to engage with sports fans, and concentrating resources on proven successful titles. Leadership stated that the publisher is “saying no to some things we’re passionate about” to ensure the company remains competitive in a rapidly changing landscape.

The Future of EA’s Portfolio

The most notable consequence of this overhaul is the cancellation of the upcoming Mass Effect game and the closure of BioWare after roughly 30 years of operation. The studio closure accounts for approximately 12.5 percent of the total staff cuts.

Beyond the cancellations, the company identified specific projects it intends to support moving forward:

  • Continued heavy investment in Apex Legends
  • A new shooter from DICE and Respawn, reportedly Star Wars Battlefront 3
  • Annual sports franchises, including EA Sports FC
  • Project Gridiron, a new open-world football experience
  • Project Evergreen, a new take on The Sims

Additionally, EA is scaling back the Skate team at Full Circle to focus on a more streamlined roadmap, and Maxis has officially paused development on the project previously known as “Project Lotus” in favor of Project Evergreen.

Why it matters

For players, this news signals a major contraction in the types of games EA will produce in the coming years. The pivot away from established narrative-driven franchises like Mass Effect toward sports-focused titles and potential growth in Asian markets suggests that the company is prioritizing live-service stability and annual recurring revenue models over single-player expansions.

While the company aims to pay down the debt from its recent buyout through these “organizational efficiencies,” fans of studios like BioWare will feel the immediate loss of long-running creative teams. Players should watch for further updates on how these “projects” like Evergreen and Gridiron translate into actual consumer experiences, as the publisher moves to implement these changes across its global operations.
