EA Sports has committed to avoiding significant gameplay balance changes in early title updates for FC 27, instead prioritizing stability at launch and giving players time to adapt to the new mechanics and systems.
What EA Sports Is Changing
During the FC 27 closed beta, EA Sports collected feedback through its forums, player feedback portal, and Discord. The studio reviewed these conversations and is implementing improvements across several areas, including physical play, Team Press, and Lengthy players.
One of the most notable adjustments targets Bruiser and Shoulder Challenge mechanics. Physical play and the Bruiser PlayStyle generated significant discussion during the beta, and EA Sports wants to keep physical defending viable while making Shoulder Challenges more consistent. The studio addressed an unintended behavior where repeatedly pressing the Shoulder Challenge button would eventually trigger a challenge even when the defender was out of position. Now, mashing the input will cause the defender to stick out an arm and lose speed, making it harder to chase down opponents through repeated button presses.
Shoulder Challenges remain most effective when defenders get side-by-side with the ball carrier rather than attempting challenges from behind. Strength continues to factor into these interactions, and properly timed challenges from the right position remain a viable defensive tool.
EA Sports emphasized that it will still address bugs and unintended behaviors significantly impacting gameplay. When fixes are necessary—such as correcting an unintended goalkeeper behavior—the studio aims to make changes as targeted as possible to limit wider impact on gameplay balance.
Why It Matters
EA Sports’ commitment to a measured approach reflects lessons learned from live-service football games. The opening weeks of any sports title typically involve rapid discovery as players learn new mechanics, experiment with different strategies, and build squads. Reacting to early trends with major balance changes risks overcorrecting to playstyles that players haven’t fully explored or understood.
By holding off on significant balance adjustments, EA Sports is betting that the meta will naturally evolve as the community discovers viable approaches. This philosophy values long-term stability over reactive tweaking based on short-term patterns.
The physical play adjustments specifically signal that EA Sports listened to beta feedback about how the Bruiser PlayStyle was being used—and abused. By penalizing spam inputs while rewarding proper positioning and timing, the studio is trying to keep physical defending interesting without allowing broken techniques to dominate.
What’s Next
Players can continue sharing feedback through EA’s FC Feedback Hub as the game approaches and launches. The real test will come once FC 27 is in the hands of the full player base—whether the launch gameplay experience holds up under the weight of millions of matches, or whether emergent strategies force EA Sports to reconsider its no-early-changes stance.
