EA Sports FC 27 has arrived, bringing a mix of refined on-pitch mechanics and a new social experiment called The Grounds, according to Eurogamer’s review. While the title continues to navigate the complex ecosystem of Ultimate Team, the core football simulation has undergone significant tuning, prioritizing a more measured approach to gameplay compared to previous iterations.
Refining the Pitch
The most immediate change in FC 27 is the introduction of two distinct gameplay modes: Competitive and Authentic. While Competitive focuses on responsiveness, the new Authentic mode delivers a slower, more deliberate pace. Players will notice a greater reliance on manual defending, as AI teammates are now less aggressive in closing down space, allowing for more tactical control. Defensive positioning is emphasized, and through-balls have been adjusted to make them more challenging to execute successfully.
New mechanics also add tactical depth. Players can now utilize an ‘Avoidance’ shoulder button to shimmy through crowds, while crossing has become less precise, requiring players to better manage pace and space. Despite the addition of ‘Attacking Spatial Awareness,’ which aims to improve AI run-making, Eurogamer’s reviewer found these movements inconsistent during intense exchanges.
The Grounds and Career Updates
Beyond the pitch, EA has introduced ‘The Grounds,’ an online social hub featuring three distinct environments inspired by the UK, Paris, and Argentina. Serving as a space for custom avatars, the mode focuses on casual social interaction and mini-games like ‘Balloon Ball’ and ‘Bucket Ball.’ While currently a niche addition, it provides a break from the standard exhibition matches.
For those invested in single-player progression, Career mode has received meaningful updates. The introduction of ‘Dynamic OVR’ allows player ratings to fluctuate based on form, injuries, and rivalries throughout the season. Furthermore, the transfer negotiation system has been overhauled to include a tension-based interface, allowing for complex deal-making with bonuses, installments, and player swaps.
Why it matters
For players, the shift toward ‘Authentic’ gameplay marks a departure from the high-speed meta of previous years, rewarding patience and tactical positioning over pure agility. However, the recurring presence of Ultimate Team remains a point of contention; PEGI has certified the game 16+, the first such rating in the series, for its use of loot boxes, reinforcing ongoing debates regarding in-game monetization and gambling-like systems.
With no direct competitor currently challenging EA’s dominance in the space, FC 27 represents, in Eurogamer’s view, a calculated iteration. Eurogamer’s reviewer suggests a rival from FIFA or 2K seems likely, which may eventually pressure EA to evolve the series beyond its current annual cycle.
