The 2026 FIFAe Finals, which were scheduled to commence on October 16 in Jeddah, have been postponed indefinitely. FIFA and the Saudi Esports Federation issued a joint statement on October 15, just one day prior to the opening ceremony, confirming the cancellation of the original timeline. No replacement date or venue has been provided for the competition, which was planned to run through October 25 at the Abadi Al Johar Arena.

This major shift in the esports calendar follows a series of high-profile withdrawals by national teams. On October 10, the Japan Football Association announced it would not send its representatives to the event, citing concerns regarding safety and security within the host country. Subsequently, the Brazilian Football Confederation cancelled the participation of the eSeleção, citing broader regional tensions and potential risks associated with the use of regional airspace and airports for its delegation.

The tournament was intended to be a global gathering of talent, featuring three distinct competitions: console eFootball, mobile eFootball, and Rocket League. The field was set to include 12 national teams for each of the eFootball categories and 16 teams for the Rocket League competition. These participants had qualified through five in-person continental championships, selected from a pool of more than 120 nations that had entered the tournament as of FIFA’s September 1 qualification announcement. While the 2026 prize pool was not officially stated, the previous 2025 edition featured a prize pool of $450,000.

Withdrawals and Logistical Impact

The decision to postpone was driven by an assessment of regional developments and their impact on the logistical arrangements necessary to successfully stage the tournament. FIFA and the Saudi Esports Federation have provided no information regarding whether the event will remain in Jeddah or be relocated. The uncertainty extends to the administrative side of the competition as well; it is currently unclear if the qualification results achieved by national teams will remain valid, how organizers will address travel and venue costs already incurred by participants, or if nations that previously withdrew, such as Japan and Brazil, would be eligible to participate if a new date is eventually announced.

This postponement adds to a growing list of disruptions for major esports events scheduled for Saudi Arabia. Earlier this year, the 2026 Esports World Cup was moved from Riyadh to Paris, and the inaugural Esports Nations Cup was pushed from November 2026 to November 2027. These shifts highlight the ongoing planning challenges for international tournaments involving national teams. Competitors and fans are advised to monitor official channels, as FIFA has promised further announcements in due course. For now, the crowning of world champions in console eFootball, mobile eFootball, and Rocket League remains on hold.

Why it matters

The postponement leaves national teams and stakeholders in a state of flux. Players who dedicated months of preparation to the October window now face an indefinite wait, while the cancellation of these dates casts doubt on the stability of the 2026 esports calendar. Because FIFA and the Saudi Esports Federation had originally confirmed the 2025 and 2026 hosting arrangements in a joint July 2025 announcement, the current delay forces a re-evaluation of the hosting and publisher agreements. With no confirmed path forward, the sporting community must wait to see if the tournament can be salvaged or if the logistical hurdles will lead to a more permanent change in venue or format.
