The debate surrounding physical media versus digital distribution has reached a boiling point, and the director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Naoki Hamaguchi, is caught right in the middle. In a recent interview, Hamaguchi addressed fan frustration regarding the game’s limited physical release, revealing that he personally pushed for a more comprehensive disc option but was constrained by broader publishing decisions.

Navigating the Push for Physical

When Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches on April 8, 2027, players on PS5 and Xbox Series X who opt for a physical copy will discover that the disc serves primarily as a “key disc,” containing only the game’s opening sequences. The remainder of the experience will require a substantial download. This setup has led to significant backlash from players who support a “no disc, no purchase” stance.

Hamaguchi, speaking to Radio Times, expressed deep empathy for those sentiments. He shared his personal history of collecting physical games as a child and noted his desire to keep tangible copies for their sentimental value. “As the director, it’s my responsibility to look after the content of the game to make sure it’s fun, really exciting,” Hamaguchi stated. “The product line-up, the SKUs, how it’s going on sale – that is the responsibility of the publishing team. So my authority there is somewhat limited.” Despite these boundaries, he confirmed he engaged in extensive internal negotiations to secure the physical offering that is currently planned.

A Changing Industry Landscape

The industry is rapidly shifting. Hamaguchi pointed to a future where physical media might effectively become obsolete, potentially transitioning into nothing more than a box containing a printed code. This outlook aligns with recent industry shifts, such as Sony’s announcement that it will cease the production of physical game discs for PlayStation titles starting in January 2028.

Why it matters

For players, this situation highlights the diminishing control developers often have over the final distribution model of their titles. If you are a collector or someone with limited bandwidth for massive downloads, the move toward “disc-less” physical releases poses a direct challenge to how you curate and preserve your library.

With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation arriving on Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, fans should be aware that a physical purchase may no longer guarantee a complete offline experience. As the market moves toward a digital-first future, the days of “playing off the disc” are becoming increasingly rare, a reality Hamaguchi himself expects to see continue as digital dominance grows across all major platforms.
