If you are used to burning through GTA story missions back-to-back, you might need to adjust your playstyle for Grand Theft Auto 6. According to a report from TweakTown, which covers a new cover story in Edge magazine, Rockstar is implementing a new system that requires players to manage cash reserves to progress through the narrative.
A New Pace for Criminal Careers
In previous entries like GTA 5, players could jump from one mission to the next as soon as a phone call arrived. In GTA 6, that speed is being dialed back. The developers have added intentional pauses between major missions, often requiring the protagonists, Jason and Lucia, to secure cash to pay for equipment, bail, or hush money before the next narrative beat becomes available.
Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, explained to Edge that the team found the pacing of GTA 5 felt too fast for the dense, detailed world they have built for the new game. By adding these natural gates, players will be forced to engage with the game’s economy during the downtime between story beats.
How to Stay Funded
To bridge the gap between missions, players will need to engage in side activities to pad their wallets. TweakTown notes that this can include traditional criminal acts like robbing gas stations or jewelry stores.
Additionally, the game features a new in-game phone app called WAINK, which allows players to accept specialized car theft jobs. These aren’t simple drive-aways; higher-end vehicles will trigger police alerts, forcing you to lose the heat before reaching your destination. Furthermore, your payout is linked to the condition of the car upon delivery, adding a layer of risk and reward to your side hustles.
Why it matters
For those of us who prefer to rush through the main campaign to reach the credits, this change represents a significant shift in core gameplay loops. Instead of a linear sprint, the story is now integrated into the game’s broader open-world economy, ensuring that players explore the systems Rockstar has built rather than ignoring them in favor of mission markers.
This “gating” means your progress is now tied to your skill in the game’s secondary criminal activities. If you want to keep the story moving, you will need to get comfortable with the WAINK app and other ways to earn quick cash, effectively making money management a prerequisite for being a successful protagonist.
