The global League of Legends community is in mourning following the loss of Lauri “Cyanide” Happonen, the Finnish esports icon who achieved legendary status by securing victory in the inaugural World Championship with Fnatic in 2011. As reported by Dexerto, citing the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat, Happonen passed away on July 31 at the age of 31. His passing was confirmed by Finland’s Digital and Population Data Services Agency, with reports of the tragedy surfacing on October 26.

Happonen made an immediate impact on the professional scene, entering the competitive circuit at just 16 years old. His historic win at the first-ever League of Legends World Championship established him as a cornerstone of the Fnatic organization. He remained a central figure within the team throughout his tenure, eventually securing three European league titles between 2013 and 2014. Throughout his career, he played alongside some of the most recognizable names in the esport, including Enrique “xPeke” Cedeño Martínez and Bora “YellOwStaR” Kim, before ultimately choosing to retire from professional competition.

Following the news, his former teammates have shared heartfelt tributes reflecting on his character. YellOwStaR posted a memorial message on social media, describing Happonen as “one of the kindest, most genuine souls I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing.” YellOwStaR shared that Happonen was more than just a teammate, noting they shared their everyday lives for over two and a half years. He also reflected on a final meeting with Happonen at a League of Legends showmatch held in July. According to YellOwStaR, the former champion was “full of dreams, plans, and projects for the future” just days before his death. While the news has devastated the community, no cause of death has been disclosed.

Why it matters

The passing of Happonen marks a somber and significant moment for the history of professional League of Legends. He is the second member of Fnatic’s original 2011 championship-winning roster to pass away, following the death of Maciej “Shushei” Ratuszniak in April 2025 at the age of 36.

For fans who followed the early developmental days of the professional scene, his loss serves as a poignant reminder of the pioneers who helped shape the title into the massive global esport it is today. While his professional competitive career concluded years ago, his legacy as a world champion remains a fundamental piece of the sport’s foundational history. The community continues to honor his contributions as a key figure in the rise of competitive gaming.
