Wizards of the Coast has officially pulled back the curtain on its next major collaboration with Marvel, titled “Darkhold Destiny.” Revealed during a packed panel at New York Comic Con, this upcoming set marks the third Marvel-themed release for Magic: The Gathering and the first to move away from established canon to create a wholly original storyline.

A New Narrative in the Multiverse

Unlike previous Marvel sets that prioritized bringing iconic heroes into the game as they exist in comic book continuity, Darkhold Destiny focuses on world-building. The set centers on a conflict involving Doctor Strange, Thor, and Ghost Rider, who are forced to contend with an invasion of the multiverse spearheaded by Hela and Dormammu. The aesthetic leans into a darker, high-fantasy tone, with early previews suggesting vibes reminiscent of the fan-favorite Innistrad plane. The set will officially launch on April 8, 2027.

New Mechanics and Product Details

Darkhold Destiny introduces fresh mechanical depth, most notably the “Vengeance” keyword. Similar to the Adventure mechanic from Throne of Eldraine, Vengeance allows players to cast a version of the card from their graveyard. The set will also reintroduce the “Arcane” subtype, which has been dormant since the Kamigawa block. Designers also teased a mysterious new card type referred to as “Dimension,” though specifics remain under wraps for now.

The product lineup is extensive, featuring the standard array of Booster Packs, Collector Boosters, and Prerelease Packs. Players can look forward to four Commander decks: Strange Academy (WUB), Gods of Asgard (RGW), Midnight Sons (WB), and Lords of Hel (BR). Additionally, Wizards of the Coast announced that a promotional “Doctor Doom, King of Latveria” card will be available at Regal Cinemas during the opening weekend of the *Avengers: Doomsday* film, while supplies last.

Why it matters

For players, Darkhold Destiny represents a shift toward integration rather than just character adaptation. By crafting a unique story within the Magic multiverse, the set allows for more thematic consistency between iconic Marvel figures and traditional Magic elements like elves, dragons, and vampires. The inclusion of new, mechanically unique cards in various bundles and scene boxes means players should keep an eye on how these cards impact the competitive Commander landscape.

Beyond the card game, the collaboration includes a series of Infinity Comics starting in February to help bridge the gap for players unfamiliar with this specific iteration of the Marvel universe. As we approach the April 8 release date, players should watch for further reveals regarding the “Dimension” card type and the inevitable inclusion of another Infinity Stone, which has become a staple of the Marvel Universes Beyond sets.
