Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s open beta launches August 28 across all platforms, bringing new multiplayer modes, fresh Warzone content, and expanded playable maps after Infinity Ward refined the experience following the first beta weekend.

What’s New in the Open Beta

Infinity Ward is rolling out substantial new content for the second beta weekend. The Zodiac resurgence map joins Call of Duty Warzone, described as a compact combat zone set within a drone manufacturing complex where players can respawn while teammates stay alive, with enemy eliminations and contract completions shortening respawn timers.

Ground War debuts as a 24v24 multiplayer mode splitting teams across two Combat Outpost battlegrounds that mix infantry and vehicle combat. Two maps support Ground War: Imjin Farmland, featuring rural-style combat across open fields and scattered farms, and Wolves Stadium, offering urban gameplay with dense buildings and verticality.

Kill Block arrives as a unique combat space offering 3v3 or 10v10 Gunfight experiences. The arena dynamically reconfigures after every 2 rounds using interconnected slabs, randomizing loadouts and map flow to create different conditions each round.

All content from the first early access beta returns, including the chance to earn exclusive cosmetic rewards through level progression, challenges, or watching specific Twitch streamers.

Why This Matters

The expanded open beta addresses feedback from the initial weekend, when negative Steam reviews highlighted concerns about time-to-kill ratios, fast-paced movement mechanics that compressed reaction time, and the controversial skill-based matchmaking system. By introducing new modes and maps, Infinity Ward signals commitment to addressing player concerns while giving the broadest possible audience—the entire player base rather than early access participants—a chance to test the game ahead of October’s launch.

Ground War’s addition brings a mode traditional to Modern Warfare that blends large-scale multiplayer with vehicle gameplay, while Kill Block’s dynamic reconfiguration targets players seeking unpredictability and variety. The Warzone content integration keeps the battle royale ecosystem fresh as Modern Warfare 4 approaches release.

Infinity Ward’s pattern of releasing updates during the early access period, including new maps like Cachette and Lithium and attempting fixes for discovered issues, suggests the studio plans continued refinement through the open beta and into launch.

What Comes Next

Players should expect ongoing updates from Infinity Ward during the open beta weekend as the studio responds to new feedback from the expanded player pool. The studio’s focus on iteration suggests a stronger day-one experience than the issues that sometimes plague Call of Duty launches.
