Activision has revealed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, with a campaign centred on a North Korean invasion of South Korea and a new multiplayer map format called Kill Block. The game launches on October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and, for the first time for a new mainline Modern Warfare, Nintendo Switch 2.

Release date, platforms and early access

Infinity Ward leads development, supported by ten other studios including Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software. Players who pre-order digitally get access to the campaign from October 16, one week before the full launch. Pricing varies by platform and region, so check your local store for the edition you want.

The Korea campaign

The story follows a full-scale North Korean invasion of the South. Missions take place across the Korean peninsula, with further operations in New York, Paris and Mumbai. There are two lead characters: Private Park Hyun Jun, a young South Korean recruit, and Captain John Price, the former leader of Task Force 141.

The cast includes Young Mazino and Barry Sloane, with Mads Mikkelsen playing a figure known as the Archer. Samuel Roukin and Elliot Knight return in their earlier roles. Setting a Modern Warfare story in Korea is a fresh backdrop for a series that has often focused on the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

Kill Block and the beta

Kill Block is a dynamic multiplayer map with more than 500 possible configurations. Its layout shifts during a match, so lanes and sightlines change and players cannot rely on memorised routes in the same way as on a fixed map.

The beta ran from August 21 to September 1, 2026, with general access opening on August 28. It was a franchise first in two ways: it included a slice of the campaign, and it featured a new Warzone map. Switch 2 owners also got their first hands-on time with the game during this period.

Why it matters

For players, the headline change is reach. Modern Warfare 4 is a same-day release on Switch 2 alongside PlayStation, Xbox and PC, so Nintendo owners are no longer left with ports or older entries. If you want to play the campaign early, the digital pre-order window starts on October 16.

For regular multiplayer players, Kill Block is the feature to watch. A map that keeps reshaping itself rewards awareness and adaptation over spawn-trap habits, and it will be a real test of whether Infinity Ward can keep matches fair while changing the ground under players’ feet. With a new campaign setting, a new map type and a bigger platform line-up, this is one of the more significant Call of Duty launches in recent years.
