If you have been looking for an excuse to channel some serious grindhouse energy, you are in luck. Developer ProbablyMonsters has officially announced that a playable demo for their upcoming title, Nekome: Nazi Hunter, will launch on Steam from October 19 through October 26. The announcement arrives alongside a fresh trailer debuted during the Galaxies Autumn Showcase, which digs into the game’s narrative and introduces the Hyena troupe—a squad of Nazi leaders who serve as the primary antagonists.
The Hunt for the Hyenas
In an exclusive interview with Game Informer, game director Jeronimo Barrera explained that the team focused on creating a “disgusting set of villains” that would feel satisfying to take down. Following a tragic incident in Vano’s home of New York City—a setting Barrera chose to reflect the reality of historical Nazi rallies in the U.S.—the hunt expands across occupied Europe. Unlike typical cat-and-mouse thrillers, the game leans into a power fantasy where the player is strictly the hunter. Each member of the Hyena troupe is designed to provide a unique boss encounter that challenges the player’s abilities as they progress through the narrative.
Metaphysical Grindhouse Inspiration
Drawing heavy inspiration from the grindhouse film genre, the game aims to replicate the pulp-style violence seen in movies like *Inglourious Basterds*. While the action remains grounded in the goal of taking out Nazis, Barrera hinted that the team is exploring “metaphysical” themes. When asked about imagery in the trailer that could be interpreted as supernatural or vampiric, Barrera noted that the team treats the Nazis as “hideous monsters” and plays on those themes when designing character abilities and visual presentation, leaving the final interpretation to the player.
Why it matters
For players, this demo represents the first real opportunity to get hands-on with the game’s violent, high-octane mechanics before launch. If you enjoy over-the-top, stylish action games that prioritize a gritty aesthetic, this window will be the best time to see if the game’s unique “hunter” loop clicks with your playstyle.
Since the demo is launching via Steam, it should be accessible to a wide global audience. Players should keep an eye on the Steam page starting October 19 to download the build before the limited-time window closes on October 26. Following the demo, it is worth watching for further details on how the developers balance the narrative between grounded historical settings and the more abstract, metaphysical themes hinted at by the director.
