Once Human Now Live on Xbox Series X|S with Game Pass

Once Human, the free-to-play survival shooter from Starry Studio, is now available on Xbox Series X|S and included with Game Pass. The game went live following its August 25 launch, expanding the title beyond its initial PC release to Microsoft’s console ecosystem.

The move brings cross-play and cross-progression support to the Xbox version, meaning players can team up across platforms and carry their progress between PC and console. Xbox Play Anywhere functionality is also enabled, so a single purchase grants access to both Xbox console and PC versions.

**Why It Matters**

Once Human’s console arrival represents a significant distribution win for the indie survival genre on consoles. By landing directly on Game Pass—rather than launching standalone first—Starry Studio gains day-one access to Xbox’s subscription base, a proven strategy for driving early adoption of multiplayer and co-op titles. For players, it means diving into survival content without additional cost if you’re already subscribed.

The game’s emphasis on cross-play removes platform friction in a genre where cooperative survival thrives on having friends available regardless of where they’re playing. Combined with cross-progression, returning players won’t lose their investment in gear, progression, or cosmetics when switching devices.

Once Human positions itself as a strange-worlds survival experience—distinct from battle royale or traditional survival games—targeting players looking for co-op-focused wasteland gameplay. Xbox’s marketing push suggests the community response since launch has justified the expansion beyond PC, though the actual player numbers and retention metrics from the August 25 window remain unstated.

This is another data point in the broader trend of indie and mid-tier studios using Game Pass day-one launches to bypass traditional discoverability bottlenecks, particularly for multiplayer titles that live or die by critical mass.
