For those of us holding out hope for a disc-based version of the upcoming KungFuPunk action game Phantom Blade Zero, there is finally an answer—but it requires a lot of patience. According to reporting from Game Rant, developer S-Game has officially confirmed that a physical PS5 edition of the title is in the works, though it will not arrive until 2027. The project has been a long time coming for developer S-Game, with the game already seeing a delay that pushed its release out of early September and into the final week of October to allow for additional polish.

Confusion regarding the game’s physical availability has been swirling for months. Earlier this year, a social media user shared an interaction with retailer Play Asia suggesting that a physical release was not planned, leading to reports that it was not in the cards. With the game approaching its digital launch on PlayStation, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, the trailer finally addressed the speculation, confirming that while a physical version is coming, it is still years away. The teaser image showcased three planned versions: a Standard Edition, a Deluxe Edition, and an Ultimate Edition. As of now, specific pricing and the contents of the Ultimate Edition remain a mystery, though it is assumed the digital contents like the artbook and soundtrack will likely be included in the deluxe offerings.

The wait for a physical copy is particularly notable given the star power behind the game. Phantom Blade Zero turned heads when it revealed that martial arts icon Donnie Yen is performing as a major character in the game’s story. With the title now only one week away from its digital launch, players must decide whether to jump into the KungFuPunk experience immediately or hold out for a physical disc release that is not expected for several years.

Why it matters

For players who prefer physical media, this is a bittersweet announcement. While it confirms the game will eventually exist on a disc, the multi-year gap between the digital launch and the physical rollout is significant. This news arrives amid a broader, heated industry debate regarding the shift toward an all-digital future. With physical media becoming a point of contention following reports of potential industry-wide shifts away from discs and trends where some major titles include only digital codes in physical boxes, this move by S-Game highlights the friction between developer launch schedules and the preservation preferences of the gaming community. For now, collectors who prioritize physical ownership face a long wait if they wish to avoid the reliance on digital storefronts.
