Destiny 2 Content Unvaulting Details Reportedly Clarify What Is Coming Back and What Is Gone for Good

Destiny 2 players might be getting classic campaigns, raids, and destinations back from the Content Vault, but don’t mistake the move for a live-service revival. Following Bungie’s surprise announcement that it plans to restore previously cut content after shutting down active development, a new report from Forbes’ Paul Tassi has shed light on what Guardians should actually expect from the initiative.
What Is Returning (and What Stays in the Vault)
According to sources cited by Tassi, all of the returning unvaulted content will be completely free for all players, regardless of whether you originally owned the expansions or not. Much of this material had already transitioned to free-to-play before Bungie vaulted it years ago, so keeping it open to everyone makes logistical sense.
However, the scope of what is coming back is strictly limited. While legacy campaigns, destinations, and raids are on the table, the seasonal storylines that accompanied them will not return. Because Destiny 2 frequently used narrative seasons to bridge the gap between major expansions, players can expect some noticeable storytelling gaps.
Seasonal events are also excluded. Cycling through events like Festival of the Lost or Guardian Games would require an active live-operations team—a group that effectively no longer exists following Bungie’s widespread layoffs. Furthermore, most seasonal weapons are already obtainable in the current game anyway. When it comes to playlists, Tassi reports you shouldn’t expect every missing Crucible or Gambit map to reappear, though narrative-focused Strikes stand a better chance of being restored as part of the campaign packages. Dedicated seasonal activities have no current indication of returning either, though standalone appearances down the line haven’t been completely ruled out.
No Return to Active Development
For anyone holding out hope that the unvaulting heralds a fresh era of ongoing support, the report firmly shuts that down. Bungie is not resuming regular Destiny 2 updates. Outside of emergency patches to address critical bugs, no content updates or balance passes are scheduled between now and the unvaulting release.
As Tassi noted, the Monument of Triumph milestone truly marked the end-of-service for Destiny 2’s live operations. While there is no concrete release date yet for the unvaulted package—with Tassi estimating an arrival sometime next year—the game is expected to stay quiet while Bungie focuses on other priorities, including a major update for Marathon expected this December. For now, the unvaulting looks less like a fresh start and more like a permanent museum exhibit for the game’s past.
