Sega is bringing the House of the Dead franchise back to arcades with an ambitious new cabinet that blends traditional arcade spectacle with VR gameplay. The company teased the project, titled House of the Dead: Reawakened, via a short video posted Wednesday on the official Sega Amusements YouTube channel captioned “something is reawakening.”

According to Attractions Magazine, which first reported details on the cabinet, House of the Dead: Reawakened uses a theatrical approach to arcade design. The machine is built as a “miniature themed façade” styled to look like a Gothic manor, complete with an 85-inch display functioning as the mansion’s front door and two 43-inch vertical displays positioned as shuttered windows. The front door and shutter screens “create a jump-scare reveal” and the cabinet includes animated lighting, a working clock tower, and environmental audio.

How the VR Experience Works

Gameplay splits the experience between spectators and players. While onlookers see action unfold across the large displays on the cabinet’s exterior, players step inside the Gothic manor’s doorway to enter the VR play area. There, they use VR headsets equipped with 2.1 channel audio and haptic recoil gun controllers—each headset fitted with its own audio channel. The cabinet supports both single-player and cooperative two-player VR sessions.

Sega built House of the Dead: Reawakened using Unreal Engine 5, the same technology powering the company’s arcade VR title Alpha Ops VR Strike. The game contains three missions for players to complete.

Arcade Debut and Timeline

Sega will debut the cabinet at the IAAPA Expo—the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions’ annual trade show—in November. The show is a primary venue where arcade and amusement manufacturers showcase new hardware and games to venue operators.

The new cabinet marks the franchise’s return to arcades since House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn launched in 2018, making Reawakened the first major arcade entry in nearly six years.

Why it matters

For arcade players and location owners, House of the Dead: Reawakened signals that Sega is investing in premium cabinet experiences that justify higher operator costs and player ticket prices. The hybrid spectator-plus-VR design lets arcade venues create a draw—players using cutting-edge VR while friends and family watch a theatrical display—something that single-screen or single-headset games cannot offer. This design philosophy appeals to family entertainment centers and specialty arcades that compete against home gaming.

For the franchise, the cabinet also represents a creative refresh. Rather than pursuing a home or console release, Sega has chosen to keep House of the Dead in its historic arcade roots while modernizing the experience with VR and Unreal Engine 5. That bet signals confidence that the classic light-gun shooter formula still has legs in commercial venues, even as arcade gaming itself has shrunk over the past two decades.
