Since Starfield first launched, a major point of contention for players has been the game’s reliance on cutscenes and loading screens for planetary arrivals. Unlike space exploration titles such as No Man’s Sky, Starfield players were restricted to selecting a landing zone from a menu, which then triggered a transition rather than allowing for true manual atmospheric entry. Now, a modder is on the verge of changing how we traverse the galaxy.
Breaking the loading screen barrier
Modder Frederik Wessberg recently shared a progress update on his project, “Seamless Landings,” showcasing a ship transitioning from the vacuum of space directly onto a planet’s surface without a single loading screen. Wessberg, who has spent roughly six months on the project, confirmed that the mod supports both manual piloting and autopilot, allowing players to either take the stick or sit back and enjoy the view as they enter the atmosphere.
The technical accomplishment goes beyond just removing loading screens. To make this work, Wessberg had to completely rebuild the game’s planet rendering. In the vanilla version of Starfield, planets are essentially flat textures when viewed from space. By reimplementing the rendering in 3D, Wessberg has utilized the game’s underlying atmospheric data to create volumetric clouds, weather systems like thunderstorms, auroras at the poles, and atmospheric scattering based on the planet’s specific composition. Interestingly, Wessberg noted that the base game already contains surprisingly accurate physical data for space simulation; the developers simply never revealed those layers to the player.
Why it matters
For the Starfield community, this mod represents a massive shift in immersion. The inability to fly directly to a surface has been one of the most cited criticisms regarding the game’s scale and feeling of exploration. By bypassing the “glorified loading screens” that were built into the original release, this project aims to provide the true space-sim experience that many players felt was missing from their original journey through the Settled Systems.
While the mod is still a work-in-progress, Wessberg has stated that once it is ready, it will be released for free on NexusMods. For players looking to overhaul their experience, this is a development to watch closely as it fundamentally changes one of the core mechanics of the RPG. No specific release date for the mod has been announced yet, so players should keep an eye on the NexusMods platform for future updates from Wessberg.
