When it comes to remaking a classic, the line between updating gameplay and preserving nostalgia is notoriously thin. With Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the development teams at Flying Wild Hog and Crystal Dynamics are aiming to strike that balance by leaving the game’s most poignant moments largely unchanged.

In a recent discussion reported by GamingBolt, creative director Michał Kuk told Edge Magazine that the team prioritized preserving specific locations and vistas that hold emotional weight for long-time fans. Kuk explained that the team focused on the mental snapshots players keep from their original experiences—the specific objects and scenes that generated the most feeling—and ensured those were kept “almost untouched” in the new build.

Modernizing the Experience

While the emotional heart of the game remains consistent, the team is still pushing for a total overhaul in other areas. Crystal Dynamics experience director Jeff Adams noted that the massive leap in visual fidelity required some changes to maintain a sense of realism. For instance, the team is addressing “unrealistic” elements from the 1996 original, such as finding health kits in tombs that had been sealed off for thousands of years, to better suit modern standards.

Studio head Scott Amos and game director Will Kerslake have described the project as a “reimagining” rather than a simple 1:1 remake. Built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, the game is being framed as a “love letter” to the franchise that respects the DNA of the original title while integrating modern gameplay mechanics designed for current-day audiences. By turning areas that were once simple background images into fully realized 3D environments, the developers are hoping to bridge the gap between 30 years of history and modern gaming expectations.

Why it matters

For players who grew up with the original Tomb Raider, this approach suggests the game is trying to avoid the pitfalls of “soulless” remakes by protecting the iconic atmosphere of the original. Whether you are a veteran adventurer or jumping in for the first time, this title aims to retain the spirit of the 90s classic while providing the graphical and mechanical polish expected from current-gen hardware.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set to launch on February 12th for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. If you are curious to see how these environmental updates look in action, the team has been releasing developer diaries to showcase the transition into modern 3D spaces.
