Wizards of the Coast is shaking up the Magic: The Gathering experience with the introduction of ‘God Packs,’ a new type of booster pack entirely comprised of rare and mythic cards. Much like a lottery win for players, these packs are designed to offer a heightened sense of excitement by guaranteeing a high density of high-rarity pulls.

The Odds and Distribution

According to the official announcement, both Play Boosters and Collector Boosters will have the chance to be God Packs, though Collector Boosters offer significantly better odds. Players can expect a God Pack in approximately 1 in 1,000 Play Boosters and 1 in 300 Collector Boosters.

The distribution within these packs varies by type. A Play Booster God Pack includes 10 non-foil rares or mythics, one special ‘God Pack celebration card,’ two non-foil ‘Booster Fun’ variants, and two foil ‘Booster Fun’ variants. Collector Booster God Packs will contain one foil land, three foil default frame rares or mythics, three non-foil ‘Booster Fun’ variants, and five foil ‘Booster Fun’ variants.

Shrinking the Pack Size

This change comes alongside a reduction in overall pack size. Wizards of the Coast is removing foil commons and uncommons from Play Boosters entirely. Similarly, Collector Boosters will be trimmed down to 12 cards by removing three foil common and uncommon slots. Wizards stated this decision aims to prioritize cards that players are generally more excited to see, noting that many players currently skip over these lower-rarity slots when opening packs. Additionally, the company confirmed it is increasing the overall drop rates for foil rare and mythic rare cards across all boosters.

Why it matters

For the average player, these changes represent a significant shift in the ‘pack-cracking’ experience. While the inclusion of God Packs adds a thrilling, high-value chase element, the removal of common and uncommon slots may impact the accessibility of cards frequently used in competitive constructed play. Players should keep an eye on how these changes affect the secondary market, as commons and uncommons that see play could potentially become harder to source.

These adjustments are set to debut with the release of ‘Nauctis: The Sunken Realm’ and will apply to all future in-universe sets. Fans of ‘Universes Beyond’ sets can expect to see these new booster configurations arrive starting in 2028.
