Viper
The story
Where she comes from
United States. Viper is a chemist, and unlike most agents whose profession is decoration, hers is the entire design. She does not shoot better than you. She makes the ground you want to stand on unusable.
She is also the closest thing the Protocol has to someone nobody is comfortable around, and the writing does not soften it. Where other agents have a wound, Viper has a temperament.
What she actually is
Viper is the only agent in VALORANT playing a resource management game.
Everyone else gets charges that reset each round. Viper gets a fuel gauge that drains while her utility is switched on and refills when it is off. That single mechanic changes the texture of every round she plays, because she is constantly deciding whether the wall she is holding up is worth what it is costing her.
No other character in this game asks that question, and it is the reason she rewards experience more than reflexes.
What she does in a game
Controller. Her snake bite is a canister that shatters into a chemical zone, damaging and decaying anyone who stands in it. Her poison cloud is a reusable emitter she throws once and can toggle on and off for the rest of the round. Her toxic screen is a line of emitters placed through terrain that raises a long wall of gas, also toggleable.
Her ultimate fills a large area around her with a cloud that nearsights and decays everyone inside, and it stays up as long as she stays in it.
Decay is worth understanding properly. It does not kill. It drops a target to a fraction of their health without ever finishing the job, which means anyone who walks through her gas arrives at the fight already losing it.
What it feels like
Viper is patient in a way that feels wrong at first. You are not blocking one sightline, you are drawing a line across half the map and deciding which side of it the round is going to happen on. Her wall is the longest piece of vision denial in the game and it is up whenever she decides it should be.
Her ultimate is the clearest example of the trade. Inside it you are extremely powerful and completely committed, because leaving ends it. Some of the best rounds in this game are five players slowly realising they have to walk into a Viper pit and that she is already in there.
Playing against her is about the fuel gauge. Her utility is finite in a way nobody else’s is, and a team that forces her to hold her wall early arrives at the site later against a Viper with nothing left.
Who should pick her up
Players who want to shape a whole round rather than win a fight in it. Viper on a large map is the strongest map-control agent in the game, and on defence she can make a site not worth attacking at all.
Skip her if you want to be immediately useful. She has the steepest learning requirement of any controller, most of it in knowing exactly where her wall goes on each map, and a Viper who guesses is a Viper who has blocked her own team’s angles for forty seconds.
