Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s upcoming beta may finally solve one of PC gaming’s most persistent annoyances: the dreaded ‘Compiling Shaders’ wait that kicks in when starting a game for the first time or after major updates. Alongside that fix, Infinity Ward and Beenox are also reducing restart requirements that have plagued Call of Duty players on PC for years.
How the Shader Fix Actually Works
Modern PC games require shaders to tell your graphics card how to render effects, lighting, shadows, and surfaces. Typically, these shaders compile in full when you first launch a game, after GPU driver updates, or when major patches drop. The process can eat up significant time before you can actually play.
Starting with the Modern Warfare 4 beta, Call of Duty games can now pre-load shaders in the background after download completes. The implementation varies by platform. On Battle.net, shader pre-loading happens automatically by default. On Steam, the feature is enabled, but you’ll still sit through the ‘Compiling Shaders’ step on your first launch—though it should be noticeably faster than before. Future launches should benefit fully from the pre-loading tech.
Infinity Ward notes the real payoff arrives at the full game’s launch, when PC players won’t need to recompile shaders with each seasonal update, a persistent headache in current Call of Duty titles.
Consoles have never dealt with this because their standardized hardware and software configurations allow shaders to ship pre-compiled with every download.
Fewer Forced Restarts Coming Too
The ‘Update Requires Restart’ problem—where the game forces you to close and relaunch to apply patches, sometimes multiple times in succession—is also getting addressed. Modern Warfare 4 beta reduces how often this happens by allowing more patch types to download without triggering a restart.
The fix isn’t universal. If an update arrives while you’re actively playing and the game boots you out, a restart will still be required. But Infinity Ward aims to make those moments rarer. PC players across all storefronts and PlayStation 5 players should see the intended improvement during the beta. Xbox players will still face restarts during the beta phase, though the studio is working toward better handling by launch. Nintendo Switch 2 will continue requiring restarts in both beta and at launch.
Why It Matters
These aren’t flashy features—no new weapons, maps, or modes here. But for PC players especially, they address genuine friction that’s plagued the franchise for years. The shader compilation wait has been endemic across modern PC gaming, and Call of Duty’s scale made it particularly punishing. Same with the cascade of forced restarts after a long break away from the game.
Console parity has always been a sore point for PC players in shooters. While consoles enjoy seamless updates, PC players got the short end. These changes signal Infinity Ward taking that gap seriously.
What’s Next
The Modern Warfare 4 beta launches August 21st, immediately after the Call of Duty: Next live event. Pre-loading begins today at 9am PT. PC players should expect to see whether these fixes deliver the quality-of-life boost the developers are promising.
