Asobo Games has expressed interest in developing a new A Plague Tale title set in the modern day, drawing creative inspiration from Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us franchise. The studio’s creative leads confirmed the concept during a Gamescom interview ahead of the launch of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.

What the Studio Said

When asked about pursuing a modern-day setting for the series, lead writer Carol Ann Bañuls responded positively, saying “Absolutely” and “Definitely. Personally, I think so. I think it would be great.” Bañuls noted that such a project would follow The Last of Us model, explaining, “It would be really Last of Us kind of,” and acknowledged that Naughty Dog’s work was “a big inspiration.”

Actor Anna Demetriou, who voices protagonist Sophia in Resonance, added that a contemporary spin-off is something she gets asked about frequently by fans. Demetriou expressed enthusiasm for how the concept could work, saying, “It would be amazing. I would love that to fit into a modern-day setting. Yeah, it would be interesting to see what that would look like. I would love that.”

Demetriou pointed out that the Prima Macula—the ancient curse central to the A Plague Tale universe—is “fantastical” in nature, which she believes would translate well to a modern timeframe. The Macula, a blood-borne plague affecting certain families, appears across every major A Plague Tale game, including the recently launched Resonance.

Why This Matters

The Last of Us established a template for survival-horror storytelling grounded in contemporary settings, blending character-driven narrative with fungal apocalypse mechanics. The Plague Tale series has built its identity around historical settings and gothic atmosphere, with Resonance continuing that tradition in Renaissance Italy. A pivot to the modern day would represent a significant tonal and environmental shift for the franchise while maintaining its core theme of a supernatural plague ravaging a bloodline.

Asobo’s openness to this direction signals confidence in the series’ thematic flexibility. The Prima Macula’s fantastical nature—as opposed to grounded biological realism—gives the studio room to adapt the lore to contemporary environments without requiring the gritty survivalism that defines Last of Us gameplay. This could allow Plague Tale to explore urban settings, modern technology, and contemporary social dynamics while preserving its character-focused storytelling.

The fact that fans actively ask about a modern-day entry suggests audience appetite for such an experiment. Meanwhile, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy has just launched on PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC, giving the studio time to assess player reception before committing to future projects.

What’s Next

Asobo Games hasn’t formally announced its next project, leaving the modern-day concept in the “interested but undecided” category for now. Players and franchise followers will likely watch for how Resonance performs and what the studio reveals about its development priorities in coming months.
