Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis has introduced its primary antagonist, Jacqueline Natla, an immortal former ruler of Ancient Atlantis and CEO of Natla Technologies, voiced by actress Adrienne Wilkinson. The reveal comes through the seventh installment of a series of behind-the-scenes mini-documentaries about the game’s development.
Who Is Jacqueline Natla
Natla will serve as Lara Croft’s nemesis as the protagonist discovers the secrets of Atlantis throughout the game. In the mini-documentary, Wilkinson discussed the character’s role and significance. “She might be a little terrifying – but oh will you love every second around her,” Wilkinson said. She described Natla as essential to the narrative, explaining: “Stories like Tomb Raider need someone like Natla because stories need the idea of a ‘noble foe.’ It happens within everyone’s life. You have someone within your life that motivates you to push harder, to go further, and Natla does that. She raises the stakes every time she does something.”
What Makes Legacy of Atlantis Special
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis reimagines Lara Croft’s 1996 debut adventure with Unreal Engine 5 visuals, modern gameplay mechanics, and expanded storytelling that connects to Lara’s future adventures. Developed in partnership between Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, the game takes players across multiple exotic locations including the jungles of Peru, ruins of Greece, deserts of Egypt, and a mysterious Mediterranean island. Throughout her journey, Lara hunts for scattered pieces of the Scion, an artifact of immense power, while navigating treacherous terrain, solving ancient contraption puzzles, and battling dangerous wildlife and creatures.
Why It Matters
The Tomb Raider franchise defined the action-adventure genre upon its 1996 release, establishing Lara Croft as one of gaming’s most iconic characters. A remake of the original game represents a significant undertaking—balancing nostalgia with modern design standards requires careful attention to what made the original compelling while taking advantage of current technology and storytelling approaches. The casting of Wilkinson and the emphasis on Natla as a “noble foe” suggests the developers are treating the villain as central to the narrative rather than a mere obstacle. This approach aligns with modern game design philosophy where antagonists serve as meaningful character foils rather than one-dimensional threats.
