Grand Theft Auto VI will feature more than 170 animal species across land, sea and air, according to a Game Informer exclusive. Rockstar Games is filling the state of Leonida, its take on Florida, with a wide mix of native and invasive wildlife as it prepares for the game’s November 19, 2026, launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Bringing the Florida wilderness to life
Leonida’s ecosystem includes Florida staples such as alligators, manatees, flamingos and pelicans. Rockstar is also including some of the stranger parts of Florida’s real ecosystem, such as feral cats, cane toads, green iguanas and even rhesus macaque monkeys. Many of these animals are appearing in a Rockstar game for the first time.
To make the wildlife look and behave convincingly, Rockstar is building on technology developed for the Red Dead Redemption series. That includes advanced rendering for different feather types and fur, along with biological effects such as bioluminescence, translucency and iridescence.
Discovery and rarity
Players who enjoy tracking animals will have a dedicated system to explore. Creatures are grouped by rarity, with categories labeled Rare, Discoverable and Legendary. Rockstar has not revealed which animals fall into the hardest-to-find tiers, which suggests the map will hold plenty of surprises for players who spend time away from the cities.
The approach echoes Red Dead Redemption 2, where hunting, tracking and cataloguing wildlife became a major activity for many players. How closely GTA VI’s system follows that model, including whether animals can be hunted or only observed and recorded, has not been fully detailed.
Where the animals live
Leonida is a large and varied map. Rockstar has previously highlighted regions including Vice City, the Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers wetlands, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. That spread of beaches, swamps, islands and forests gives Rockstar room to place very different species in different habitats, from marine life around the Keys to alligators in the wetlands.
Release date and platforms
GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two has repeatedly said the game is on track for that date after earlier delays. The story follows Lucia and Jason, a criminal duo, across Leonida. A PC version has not been announced.
Why it matters
A wildlife roster this large signals how much Rockstar is investing in the parts of GTA VI outside its main story and cities. For players, it points to a world that rewards exploration, with rare animals to find and more reasons to head into the countryside.
For fans in the GCC and wider Middle East, where GTA is one of the most popular series, the November date is now less than two months away. Players planning to buy should check pre-order options and storage space on their consoles ahead of launch.
