Xbox is doubling down on its intellectual property outside of traditional game development by launching a new dedicated licensing arm called XP. The move, announced by Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball, aims to consolidate various existing licensing efforts into a centralized division focused on maximizing the reach and revenue of major franchises like Fallout and Minecraft.

The New XP Division

XP will focus on four primary pillars: Xbox Pictures, which will oversee film and television adaptations; Xbox Products, handling merchandise; Xbox Places, dedicated to live events and themed attractions; and Xbox Partnerships, which will manage collaborations with brands and content creators. According to Ball, the division is intended to build upon the foundation of core gaming franchises by creating more ways for fans to experience these worlds. This strategic pivot follows the success of existing projects like the Fallout TV show and the Minecraft movie.

Leadership Changes at Mojang

Alongside the announcement of XP, Xbox leadership revealed that Maria Angelidou-Smith will take over as CEO of Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft. Angelidou-Smith joins from a background in tech leadership, including a nearly decade-long tenure at Meta, where she focused on product development, creator ecosystems, and monetization. Xbox executive Asha Sharma noted that the company sought a leader with experience in managing communities at an enormous scale, emphasizing the need to align product, technology, and monetization strategies for the future of Minecraft.

Why it matters

For players, this shift signals a future where beloved Xbox franchises will have an increasingly visible footprint beyond the console. Whether it is more media adaptations, live experiences, or brand collaborations, the goal is clearly to extend the lifecycle and profitability of these brands. However, these organizational changes are taking place against a backdrop of significant industry instability, including ongoing layoffs at Microsoft that have impacted thousands of employees.

While the company looks to diversify how it engages with fans, players should watch to see how these licensing deals influence the direction of the games themselves. As the focus shifts toward cross-media growth and monetization strategies led by executives with deep roots in social media and tech platforms, the long-term impact on the core gaming experience remains to be seen. No specific details regarding regional impact for the GCC or the Middle East—such as server availability or local events—were provided in the announcement.
