After nearly a decade spent perfecting Spider-Man across three games, Insomniac Games moved into Marvel’s mutant universe with a very different kind of hero. Marvel’s Wolverine, which launched on September 15, 2026 exclusively on PlayStation 5, was positioned as more than a vehicle for brutal claw combat. The team’s stated goal was to dig into what makes Logan tick as a character, and to show the vulnerable man behind the weapon.

The story setup

The game follows James “Logan” Howlett as he reunites with Team X after a three-year absence to investigate the abduction of mutants. The main antagonist is Bolivar Trask, a human-supremacist industrialist, and his Reavers militia. The story travels across Canada, Madripoor and Japan, and Jean Grey plays a significant role.

Logan is voiced by Liam McIntyre. Jason Spisak voices Bolivar Trask, Troy Baker plays Dr. Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister, and Kelly Hu plays Tyger Tiger. Other familiar villains include Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, Sabretooth and Mystique.

Beyond the berserker rage

Insomniac’s Spider-Man games established the studio as skilled at translating superhero identity into interactive form, teaching players the rhythm of web-slinging, stealth and traversal. Wolverine demanded a shift in perspective, moving from Marvel’s optimistic, quipping hero to one of its most damaged and introspective characters.

The team’s goal was peeling back the layers of Logan’s psyche and moving beyond the obvious appeal of rage and healing factor. That shows up in the structure: the Nightmare Doors side activity has players confront manifestations of Logan’s nightmares to uncover pieces of his past, turning his trauma into playable content rather than background lore.

The game is a linear, single-player action-adventure rather than an open world, which gives Insomniac more control over pacing and character moments than its Spider-Man sandbox allowed.

How to play it

Marvel’s Wolverine is available on PS5 in a $69.99 Standard Edition and a $79.99 Digital Deluxe Edition. It is rated for adults, and a toggle lets players reduce blood and dismemberment. It launched with 35 accessibility options, New Game Plus and mission replay.

Why it matters

The games industry has rarely given Logan a starring role that prioritizes his internal struggles over spectacle. A Wolverine game built on vulnerability as well as violence represents a real tonal departure for Insomniac’s Marvel partnership, and early reviews have been generally favorable, though some critics found the combat repetitive.

For PS5 owners, it is the year’s biggest PlayStation exclusive before GTA 6 arrives in November, and the story focus makes it a good fit for players who value character over open-world checklists.
