As we count down to the November launch of GTA 6, Rockstar’s focus on the bond between protagonists Jason and Lucia is generating more than just gameplay excitement. The game’s deep relationship system—which allows players to control everything from hand-holding and kissing to how quickly characters respond to texts—has unexpectedly ignited a debate about whether interacting with digital partners constitutes real-world cheating.
According to an IGN report, the conversation stems from a YouGov survey of 4,000 British adults. The findings revealed that 6% of respondents view digital romance as cheating, with an additional 19% stating that while they wouldn’t label it as cheating, they would still feel uncomfortable with their partner participating. The data suggests that women are more likely to object to these mechanics, with 7% calling it cheating compared to 4% of men.
This concern isn’t limited to theoretical polls. IGN reports that social media platforms like TikTok have seen backlash from individuals who claim the in-game mechanics are “in-depth” enough to be grounds for breaking up, with some declaring they will forbid their partners from playing the title.
Despite the controversy, Rockstar Games has clarified that players can choose how much they engage with these features. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained that the relationship is something players “steward” rather than something they are forced to pursue. “Jason and Lucia want a relationship at the start of the game, but it’s up to the player to actively pursue that,” Nelson noted, adding that while the pair will always have each other’s backs, the intensity of their romantic connection is determined by the player’s choices.
Why it matters
For players, this highlights an interesting divide between gameplay roleplay and real-world relationship expectations. While titles like The Sims have long allowed for domestic simulation, the cinematic “Bonnie and Clyde” nature of GTA 6 has clearly struck a nerve with some real-world partners.
If you are planning to dive into the story of Jason and Lucia, keep in mind that the intensity of their bond is player-driven. Whether you choose to lean into the romance or keep things strictly professional, the choice remains yours. As the game approaches its November release, it is worth noting that players should expect their partners to have varying opinions on just how “serious” these in-game romantic interactions should be.
