Microsoft and The Coalition have pushed out a new update for Gears of War: E-Day, bringing a variety of technical fixes and a limited-time Halloween event to the game. According to reporting from DSOGaming, this patch focuses on stabilizing the campaign experience and cleaning up some lingering issues in Horde and Versus modes.

Campaign and Technical Improvements

The update includes several quality-of-life fixes for the game’s campaign. Players who encountered broken mission goals, camera detachment issues at the Act Two construction site, or a stuck train car in Act Four should find these problems resolved. The patch also addresses a persistent bug where the visual navigation aid would get stuck pointing at a sinkhole, as well as an issue involving missing dialogue at the start of Act Four, Chapter Four. Beyond these specific quest fixes, the update targets stability and crash reduction across PC, Xbox, and handheld platforms, including a fix for sign-in errors caused by incorrect system date or time settings.

Horde and Versus Updates

Competitive and cooperative players will see adjustments to how sessions are handled. In Horde Siege, a bug that kicked entire servers if a single player failed to load has been addressed, and E-Holes can now be closed without interference from other squads. Ranked Versus matches have been adjusted to wait two minutes—up from one—before ending when a player disconnects, giving teams a better chance to recover. Additionally, developers have fixed spots where dropped bombs could become trapped out of reach and corrected an error where the “Killjoy” ribbon was mistakenly awarded for destroying enemy equipment.

Halloween Event Content

To mark the season, the update introduces a “Trick-or-Treat” event for Versus mode, where players battle with pumpkin heads and compete for the “Jack-o-Cannon,” with special rewards hidden in pumpkins across the maps. Horde Siege also receives a thematic update featuring the Boogeyman and a crew of glowing pumpkin-themed enemies, providing additional opportunities for players to earn event-specific rewards.

Why it matters

For those currently playing, this update is a crucial maintenance patch. By fixing the server-kicking bug in Horde and the Ranked match disconnect timing, the developers are actively addressing common points of frustration for online play. While the team notes that they are still investigating reports of freezes and crashes during long sessions, these fixes should provide a more reliable experience in the interim.

Players should be aware that the developers are actively monitoring reports of a smoke grenade exploit and are taking enforcement action against users employing aimbots or other cheats. As the game continues to evolve, keeping your client updated via Steam or your respective platform is essential to access these fixes and time-limited content.
