Developer Rebel Wolves has revealed the graphics modes coming to The Blood of Dawnwalker at launch, and console players won’t see 60fps on any configuration. The action RPG, launching September 3 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, will target a maximum of 40fps on both PlayStation and Xbox.

What the Console Modes Actually Are

Rebel Wolves detailed the frame rate targets across Sony and Microsoft hardware in a new trailer. On PS5 Pro, players get two options: a Quality mode targeting 30fps at dynamic 4K, or a Balanced mode targeting 40fps at dynamic 4K. The PS5 Pro’s enhanced visual quality applies to both modes. The base PS5 offers identical frame rate targets—30fps in Quality, 40fps in Balanced—also at dynamic 4K, without the Pro’s visual enhancements. Xbox Series X matches those same targets: Quality mode at 30fps dynamic 4K, Balanced mode at 40fps dynamic 4K. The developer did not provide frame rate details for Xbox Series S performance.

Why This Stings

The Blood of Dawnwalker is built around precise swordplay at the center of its combat systems, where frame smoothness directly impacts your ability to land hits and dodge incoming attacks. In a game where every frame can matter for survival, the absence of a 60fps mode on even the most powerful current-gen hardware raises eyebrows. Many modern console games, especially on PS5 Pro, have managed 60fps performance modes, making this choice feel like a step backward for players expecting smoother combat responsiveness.

For a title positioned as one of 2026’s most exciting-looking games—featuring you as Coen, a half-human, half-vampire protagonist trying to save his family in a 14th century European setting—the performance ceiling is lower than players anticipated. The gap between console and PC is widening just weeks before release, and some players have already voiced frustration on social media, with comments indicating they’re shifting to PC to escape the frame rate limitation.

What Comes Next

Whether Rebel Wolves can address this through a post-launch patch remains unknown at this stage. The conversation around The Blood of Dawnwalker’s 40fps ceiling mirrors broader industry conversations about frame rate targets, with major releases continuing to face scrutiny over smoothness versus visual fidelity trade-offs.
