Overwatch developers are acknowledging the mixed reactions following the decision to strip Sombra of her signature Hack ability in her transition to the support class for Season 5: A Grim Doctrine. While the team understands that the removal of her iconic disruption mechanic will leave some veteran players feeling frustrated, they maintain that the shift is a necessary step to improve the overall health of the game.

The End of Ability Locking

Senior hero designer Leo Robles Gonzalez addressed the controversy during a recent developer livestream. He explained that the team experimented with numerous iterations of Sombra that retained the ability to hack enemies, but found that even with reduced damage, the character still created a “feeling of Sombra appearing out of nowhere, turning off my abilities, and then outputting damage that I can’t really do anything about.” To mitigate this, the classic Hack has been replaced by ‘Hotfix,’ a new ability that functions as a healing-over-time mechanic for allies. Additionally, Sombra receives a new ability called ‘Cyberspace,’ a projectile that weakens foes and heals teammates, cementing her pivot to the support role.

Defining the New Identity

Despite the loss of offensive hacking against players, Blizzard notes that the “hacker” identity isn’t entirely gone. The Hotfix ability still allows Sombra to interact with the environment, including health packs and deployable objects like Torbjörn’s turrets or Ashe’s B.O.B. Furthermore, EMP remains her primary method for hacking human opponents, ensuring she retains some of her original disruptive flair during ultimate activations. Hero designer Scott Kennedy expressed confidence in the new direction, stating that while the transition will be jarring, the team believes this will be “the last rework” for the hero and that players will eventually grow to appreciate the new playstyle.

Why it matters

For long-time Sombra players, this change fundamentally alters her role from a backline menace to a utility-focused support. Players who enjoyed the high-pressure, ability-denial gameplay will need to adapt to a rhythm focused on sustain and team support rather than solo disruption. This rework is part of a broader push by Blizzard to balance the hero roster following a period of significant growth for the franchise. Whether this final iteration successfully bridges the gap between Sombra’s hacker identity and her new support duties remains to be seen once players get significant hands-on time with the updated kit in Season 5.
