World of Warcraft is officially looking to break out of its keyboard-and-mouse roots. With the upcoming release of World of Warcraft: Forever on November 4, Blizzard is introducing native controller support—a feature that the developers say is only the beginning of a broader plan to make the iconic MMORPG playable on almost any device.
According to reporting by Video Games Chronicle, the decision to implement gamepad functionality isn’t just about accessibility; it’s a strategic step toward a multi-platform future. Holly Longdale, executive producer and vice president for World of Warcraft, noted that the team’s goal is to allow players to “play it wherever you want and, at some point, on whatever you want.”
The path to ubiquity
Blizzard is keeping a close eye on the hardware landscape, specifically noting the rise of hybrid devices. Longdale pointed to the increasing popularity of handhelds like the ROG Ally X as proof that player habits are changing. By baking controller support into the foundation of World of Warcraft: Forever—a version of the game that revisits the original 2004 setting with fresh content—Blizzard is positioning itself to jump onto new hardware as it arrives.
The studio is also looking ahead at the rumored Xbox “Project Helix.” As described in the VGC report, Project Helix is expected to function as a console-PC hybrid capable of bridging the gap between traditional living room gaming and PC storefronts. By ensuring the game feels right on a gamepad, Blizzard is essentially future-proofing the Warcraft experience for a world where the line between a gaming PC and a console continues to blur.
Why it matters
For players, this shift signals a major change in how we interact with one of the longest-running MMOs in history. If Blizzard successfully bridges the gap to new platforms, we could see a future where World of Warcraft is no longer tethered to a traditional desk setup.
For those who prefer playing from the couch or on the go, this flexibility offers a massive boost to convenience. While we have to wait and see how these plans materialize alongside the development of new hardware, the focus on gamepad optimization ensures that even if you’re playing on a handheld or a TV-connected device, you won’t be fighting the controls to get your raiding or questing done.
