New Mod Project Aims to Bring First-Person Gameplay to World of Warcraft Forever

A dedicated modder is looking to fundamentally change the way players experience the world of Azeroth by transforming the MMO into an immersive first-person RPG. As reported by PCGamesN, a mod currently in development called ‘Retro Forever’ seeks to bridge the gap between Blizzard’s classic MMO gameplay and the high-intensity perspective of shooters like Doom, Hexen, and Heretic.
The inspiration behind the immersion
Modder ‘Arhkain’ began the project as an attempt to fix a long-standing personal grievance: the lack of a true first-person camera mode within the World of Warcraft engine. While players have historically been able to zoom their cameras into their character’s eyes, the game’s UI and graphics were never optimized for that perspective. According to PCGamesN, Arhkain initially started the project years ago but had to put it on hold due to time constraints.
The revival of the project came alongside the beta for the reborn World of Warcraft Forever. By utilizing a WeakAuras fork known as ForeverAuras, the creator has found a way to display graphics and combat animations that better suit a first-person view. Currently, the mod features 2D art styles inspired by retro titles like Daggerfall and Doom, with the developer opting for manual, human-led design rather than AI-generated assets.
Why it matters
For players, this mod represents a massive shift in how the game feels. By changing the camera to a first-person view, Arhkain notes that players gain a new sense of scale regarding the game’s architecture and the intimidating size of its creatures. However, this immersion comes with a tactical cost. Players lose the traditional spatial awareness provided by the isometric view, making them more vulnerable to being snuck up on by enemies.
Currently, Retro Forever is in the early stages of development and is not yet available for public download. The project is focusing its initial efforts on the Mage class to test interest and viability. If successful, Arhkain hopes to build a community to help expand the project to other classes. For now, it serves as an intriguing proof of concept for those looking to experience Azeroth from an entirely new angle.
