Capcom has assured Nintendo Switch 2 players that the upcoming Onimusha: Way of the Sword will deliver a comparable experience to the PS5 version, even though the handheld hardware runs at reduced specifications. Producer Akihito Kadowaki stated that players “may not even be able to feel a difference” between the two versions, marking another strong multiplatform port from the publisher following recent releases like Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata.

What Capcom Is Saying About the Switch 2 Version

In an interview with Famitsu, Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei discussed how the Switch 2 port compares to other platforms. Kadowaki confirmed that while the Switch 2 version does have lower picture quality and frame rate than other systems, the team is confident the action remains fully enjoyable. The PS5 version runs at 60 FPS or higher, while the Switch 2 version runs at 30 FPS—a technical difference Kadowaki feels doesn’t meaningfully impact gameplay.

Interestingly, development of the Switch 2 version began partway through the game’s overall production cycle. Despite this later start, playtesting feedback convinced the team that “this really could compete with the other platforms.” Director Nihei highlighted a different advantage unique to the Switch 2: the ability to play the full game in handheld mode. He noted that the development staff found “being able to fully play the game while laying down in bed” to be “simply incredible.”

Why This Matters for Console Ports

Capcom’s confidence in the Switch 2 version reflects a broader pattern in how Nintendo’s new hardware is being received by major publishers. The Switch 2’s specs sit between the current generation and last generation of home consoles, making it a more capable platform than the original Switch while still requiring optimization work from developers. When major studios like Capcom publicly declare that a handheld port feels nearly identical to a home console version, it signals both the hardware’s capabilities and the developer’s willingness to invest in quality multiplatform releases.

The 30 FPS target on Switch 2 versus 60 FPS on PS5 represents a standard compromise for handheld gaming, one players across the industry have come to accept as part of the trade-off for portability. Kadowaki’s assertion that this frame rate difference doesn’t undermine the action experience suggests Onimusha: Way of the Sword was designed with that ceiling in mind from an optimization standpoint.

What’s Next

Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4, 2026—moved up from its originally planned September 25 release date. Players looking to compare the versions firsthand will have that opportunity when the game releases, and Capcom’s track record with recent multiplatform efforts will likely shape expectations around how well the developer delivers on its claims about feature parity across platforms.
