CD Projekt Red is officially moving away from a direct translation of its hit title for the upcoming live-action project. According to reporting from IGN, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski clarified that the studio has no intention of producing a one-to-one adaptation of the game’s narrative.

Speaking to the Polish outlet PAP Biznes, Nowakowski emphasized that while the project is set within the Cyberpunk universe, it will focus on telling an original story rather than retracing the steps of V or Johnny Silverhand. The film is currently in development under the Skydance banner in partnership with Paramount, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for his work on the live-action Transformers franchise, attached to produce.

A Different Path for Night City

This creative direction mirrors the approach taken with the successful animated series *Cyberpunk: Edgerunners*. Like the show, which introduced original characters while maintaining the atmosphere and setting established by the game, the film aims to explore the broader world designed by tabletop RPG creator Mike Pondsmith. By stepping away from the specific events of the game, the studio has the freedom to delve deeper into the themes of identity and posthumanism that define the setting.

Why it matters

For players, this news sets clear expectations: the upcoming movie is not a retelling of the game they have already played. This approach suggests a focus on expanding the franchise’s lore rather than rehashing established canon. It remains to be seen how the project will balance the distinct visual style of the game with a new narrative, but fans of the universe can expect an expansion of the dystopian world they know, rather than a cinematic recap.

As the studio balances this film project alongside other initiatives—including the development of a potential *Cyberpunk* sequel and the original IP *Project Hadar*—this strategy reflects a commitment to building a broader, multi-story multimedia presence for the franchise. Fans awaiting more stories in the Night City setting should look for a fresh perspective when the project eventually hits screens.
