A new Japanese RPG, Eternal Anima, is carving out its own space in the current RPG revival by blending classic genre tropes with a unique, puzzle-oriented approach to turn-based combat. Developed by a team at Marvelous featuring industry veterans from the Final Fantasy, Persona, and Metaphor: ReFantazio franchises, the game explores themes of generational responsibility and the ripple effects of past choices on the future.

As reported by Kotaku, the story follows Wade, a character with the ability to see the history of objects through touch. In a world where the past is hidden and forbidden, Wade travels 200 years back in time to the continent of Ambulis to prevent a global ecological collapse he has witnessed in his own time. The development team is led by director Katsuhisa Higuchi (Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter Stories), with narrative work by Square Enix veteran Kazushige Nojima and concepts from author Keisuke Makino.

Future-Sight Combat Mechanics

The core of the game’s combat system is its “Future Sight” ability, which functions as an evolution of the “break” system popularized by titles like Octopath Traveler. By utilizing Wade’s foresight, players can see the exact moves an opponent will make on a progress bar before they happen. This mechanic shifts the focus from simple offensive strategies to puzzle-solving; players must carefully manage their BP (Battle Points) to delay enemy attacks, break their defenses, and prevent party members from taking fatal damage.

“Players peer into the future before choosing their actions, so their actions can change that predicted future,” producer Makoto Shioda told Kotaku. To prevent players from leaning on a single strategy, the game forces variety by discouraging the repeated exploitation of the same enemy weakness.

Why it matters

For players, Eternal Anima represents a shift toward more cerebral, high-stakes turn-based combat. By allowing players to see enemy actions, the game transforms battles into a tactical puzzle where foresight is as important as raw stats. If you enjoy games that require meticulous turn-by-turn planning rather than “brute forcing” through encounters, this title is one to watch.

While the developers noted that the game explores themes of environmental exploitation and historical legacy, no specific details regarding regional support, local server availability, or language localization for the Middle East were mentioned in the preview. Players should keep an eye on official announcements for information regarding regional release specifics and platform availability.
