Square Enix has unveiled a new gameplay feature for the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation that trades the battlefield for relaxation. During a recent stage presentation at SDCC Málaga, the team showcased hot spring locations scattered across the game’s world map, where players can take a break from their quest to stop Sephiroth.
More Than Just a Soak
According to director Naoki Hamaguchi, these hot springs provide more than just scenery. When players encounter these spots, they gain a permanent increase to their maximum HP, providing a tactical incentive to explore hidden areas of the world map. Beyond the stat bonuses, these moments are designed to offer intimate, character-focused conversations that provide a glimpse into the party’s everyday lives between major narrative beats.
Unlockable Character Skins
For those looking to customize their party, the hot springs provide a stylish reward. The footage revealed that the bathing suit outfits worn by characters during these events can be unlocked as usable skins. Clips shared by the publisher highlight new beach-ready looks for Cloud, Barret, and Cid. While Red XIII is shown relaxing in the springs, his lack of traditional clothing means his appearance remains largely unchanged. Interestingly, party member Vincent Valentine appears to stick to his signature combat attire even while soaking, keeping his mysterious edge intact.
Why it matters
For players, this feature is a significant addition to the RPG loop, as it bridges the gap between exploration and character progression. By tying permanent HP upgrades and cosmetic rewards to world exploration, Square Enix is encouraging players to venture off the beaten path rather than strictly following the main questline. These interactions also serve to flesh out the relationships between party members, a core component that fans of the previous two entries have come to expect.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation serves as the concluding chapter of the remake trilogy. While fans still have to wait until the game’s launch on April 8, 2027, to see how the story wraps up, the studio has been actively managing expectations by sharing details, such as the confirmed optional auto-leveling system and the massive 100-plus hour scope of the story. The title is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
