A glimpse into what could have been for Xbox’s Perfect Dark revival has emerged online, offering a look at gameplay mechanics that never made it to store shelves. The footage, which reportedly surfaced through a VFX artist’s portfolio, showcases roughly two minutes of development testing, including parkour-heavy movement and combat sequences.

Inside the cancelled build

Much of the video is dedicated to technical testing, specifically how firearms interact with environments and objects. Viewers can see shooting mechanics being put through their paces on various surfaces, including, notably, some fruit props and explosive barrels. Beyond the stress testing, the footage provides a look at more polished environments, beginning with a walk through a facility featuring high-energy machinery. A significant portion of the clip depicts a foot chase through a collapsing industrial setting, with protagonist Joanna Dark in pursuit of an unknown target, suggesting a level of kinetic action that was meant to define the game’s loop.

The end of the project

This project was being developed by The Initiative in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics. The cancellation of the reboot was part of a broader wave of organizational changes at Microsoft that occurred in July of last year. Reports from that time indicate that there was a genuine effort to save the project, with parent company of Rockstar Games, Take-Two, reportedly in discussions to take over publishing duties and provide additional funding. However, those negotiations allegedly stalled due to disagreements regarding the long-term ownership of the Perfect Dark IP, ultimately leading to the project’s shelving.

Why it matters

For players, this footage is a bittersweet look at the shifting landscape of Xbox’s internal studios. It provides rare insight into a project that aimed to modernize a classic franchise, only to be dismantled amidst significant industry layoffs. The cancellation of this reboot, followed by subsequent waves of staff reductions at other well-known studios like Arkane and Ninja Theory, serves as a stark reminder of the volatility currently facing high-profile game development.

While this specific vision of Perfect Dark remains in the vault, the industry chatter suggests that there was significant interest in the franchise’s potential. Reports indicate that developers like id Software had previously toyed with their own concepts for the series, including a John Wick-inspired take. For now, there is no official word on a new direction for the series, leaving fans to wonder if Joanna Dark will return in a different form in the future.
