As anticipation builds for the upcoming release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, series producer Eiji Aonuma is shedding light on the unique team dynamics that brought the project to life. In a recent interview reported by GamesRadar+, Aonuma revealed that some of the younger developers on the team had never played the 1998 N64 original, a factor he believes was instrumental in the remake’s development.

A Modern Approach

According to Aonuma, who worked as the dungeon designer and scenario director for the original title, having developers who were not tied to the legacy of the original game allowed for a more modern, fresh perspective. This input was crucial for adapting the game to contemporary standards and ensuring it feels fun for a modern audience. “It’s thanks to these young people, by thinking about how to adapt the game in the best possible way, how to make it fun once you have the controls in your hands, that this remake came into being,” Aonuma explained to AFP.

This shift in perspective has allowed the team to integrate new features that go beyond a simple visual overhaul. The remake includes specific quality-of-life improvements and gameplay tweaks, such as new sidequests, redesigned dungeons, and the inclusion of a jump button—a feature that reportedly existed early in the original game’s development but was never fully realized. Additionally, the game adopts a popular feature from *Breath of the Wild*: the ability to disable the UI for increased immersion and difficulty.

Why it matters

For players, this collaborative approach suggests a refined balance between honoring the core essence of a 28-year-old classic and implementing modern design philosophies. By blending the nostalgia of the original with adjustments suggested by a newer generation, the remake aims to provide a smoother experience that retains the “sauce” of the N64 masterpiece while fixing long-standing pain points.

With the release date set for November 5, fans will soon see how these younger developers’ contributions translate into the final product. The move reflects Aonuma’s broader strategy of mentoring younger staff to help evolve the series for future generations, indicating that this remake may be a sign of things to come for the franchise.
