Two of the most prominent development studios operating under the Bethesda and Xbox umbrella are tightening their ranks as they navigate a period of significant organizational transition. Id Software, the legendary studio behind the iconic Doom franchise, and MachineGames, the team renowned for their work on modern Wolfenstein titles and the 2024 release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, are now working more closely together than ever before.

The shift in collaboration was confirmed by id Software co-director Marty Stratton during a recent press event held for the studio’s Doom: The Dark Ages – Revelations DLC, which saw its release this summer. During the event, Stratton addressed the recent layoffs that impacted id Software as part of an ongoing Xbox reset. Stratton emphasized that the studio made a very deliberate effort to ensure that the team remained incredibly viable in both game development and their internal technology departments following the staff reductions, which affected approximately half of the studio.

According to Stratton, this deepened cooperation with MachineGames began earlier this year, predating the recent layoffs. The partnership is built upon a foundation of shared technical expertise, as both studios employ highly talented engineering teams. Stratton noted that the studios are on an amazing path and remain bullish on the projects they have ahead of them. This integration of resources is occurring as id Software concludes its work on Doom: The Dark Ages following the release of its outstanding Revelations DLC.

For players and industry observers, this partnership signals a strategic pivot toward focusing on the biggest franchises within the Xbox portfolio. MachineGames has historically utilized the idTech engine for every one of its games, making the technical synergy between the two teams a logical evolution. This strategy aligns with the goals of Bethesda boss Jill Braff, who has expressed a desire for development teams to double down on their most significant intellectual properties while simultaneously working to bring high-profile games to market more quickly.

Speculation has already begun regarding how this combined engineering force will impact future titles. MachineGames is heavily rumored to be working on a third entry in the Wolfenstein series, a prospect supported by comments from studio head Jerk Gustafsson, who has stated that the team is not done with the franchise yet. By pairing the technical expertise of id Software with the creative output of MachineGames, the studios may be positioning themselves to accelerate production cycles and enhance the quality of these upcoming, highly anticipated projects.

Why it matters

The closer alignment between id Software and MachineGames represents a core component of the current Xbox strategy to prioritize its biggest franchises. As the gaming industry watches how this unified engineering front influences the delivery speed and technical ambition of their future work, the collaboration suggests that Xbox is moving toward a model where shared technical resources drive faster, more efficient development pipelines. Whether through the expected development of a new Wolfenstein title or future projects yet to be announced, this deepened relationship between two of the industry’s most decorated first-person shooter studios is expected to play a critical role in the upcoming Xbox global roadmap.
