The long-planned transition to Jagex Accounts has officially received a hard deadline. According to an announcement from the developer, all legacy account holders will be required to migrate to a Jagex Account by November 17, 2026. After this date, players will be unable to log into either RuneScape or Old School RuneScape until the one-time upgrade process is completed.

While the migration is mandatory for the future of account security, the developer clarified that existing characters and accounts remain safely stored. If a player fails to migrate before the November deadline, they will simply be prompted to complete the process upon their next login attempt before they can resume playing. The developer noted that over 89% of active players have already made the switch over the past three years.

Increased Character Capacity and Launcher Updates

In response to feedback from players who manage multiple alt accounts, Jagex has increased the character limit on a single Jagex Account from 20 to 50. This change is designed to accommodate players who maintain large rosters of characters under one primary login.

For platform-specific updates, the developer confirmed that an Apple Silicon version of the Jagex Launcher is set to release by the end of October. Additionally, the Jagex Launcher for Linux is now available in beta. The company also removed the previous requirement for elevated permissions when installing the Launcher, making it easier to play on controlled devices.

Why it matters

The move to Jagex Accounts is a significant shift in how players access their characters, aiming to replace outdated legacy systems with modern security features like improved 2FA, backup codes, and enhanced password requirements. By consolidating accounts, players can access up to 50 characters via a single login and benefit from longer 90-day launcher sessions.

Players who currently use third-party clients, such as RuneLite, can continue to do so through the Jagex Launcher. While the migration is required for the full experience and access to support services, those using Steam, Apple, Google, or Game Center logins are not strictly forced to migrate for login purposes alone, though a Jagex Account will be necessary if they wish to use the official Launcher or access website-based support features. Players are encouraged to migrate before the November 17, 2026, deadline to avoid potential service disruptions.
