Prediction markets are seeing a rapid shift in activity, with esports contracts on the platform Kalshi reaching $1.73 billion in volume over the twelve-month period ending in September 2026. According to reporting from Esports Insider, this growth marks a significant climb from the platform’s early days, where monthly volume for esports contracts remained under $0.4 million prior to October 2025.
Rapid growth trajectory
Esports trading on the platform has scaled dramatically throughout 2026. After recording $44 million in the fourth quarter of 2025, volume rose to $173 million in Q1 2026, followed by $549 million in Q2 and $967 million in Q3. This upward trend peaked in August 2026, reaching $391 million in a single month. Esports Insider notes that this spike was driven by major events, including the Esports World Cup and Dota 2’s The International, while June saw strong interest tied to the IEM Cologne Major.
Despite this growth, esports remains a small fraction of the wider platform. At its peak in August, esports accounted for 2.9% of Kalshi’s single-leg trading volume, settling at 1.6% by September. The platform’s overall volume is dominated by “combos”—parlay-style speculative bets—which represented 58% of all platform volume in September.
Why it matters
For players and stakeholders, this data serves as a secondary barometer of esports engagement beyond traditional viewership metrics. The rise in trading volume suggests that major US-based events, such as the upcoming League of Legends World Championships, are attracting significant speculative interest.
As these platforms gain traction, they offer a new way for audiences to engage with tournament outcomes, operating distinctly from traditional state-regulated sportsbooks. While the current data provides a window into consumer interest and tournament attention, users should note that prediction market volume counts the total contracts traded rather than the cash handle, meaning individual positions traded in and out can inflate these figures.
