The idle RPG space is about to get a major injection of depth. In a recent announcement from RuneScape, developer Brendan is returning to expand the world of his previous title with Melvor Idle 2: A RuneScape Adventure. This sequel aims to refine the core mechanics that made the original a hit while pushing the boundaries of what an idle game can be.
Fresh Mechanics and Expanded Progression
Melvor Idle 2 brings a significant overhaul to the franchise’s foundations. Players can look forward to a max level cap of 120, up from the original, and a total of 29 skills to master—including five entirely new additions. The game features an updated graphical style, new animations, and a modernized user interface designed to make the experience more immersive.
Beyond visual upgrades, the game introduces a dynamic day/night cycle, a weather system, and story-driven quests that incorporate unique bosses and skilling challenges. Combat has also been overhauled with new strategic mechanics, and inventory management has been streamlined with quality-of-life additions like item tagging, bank tab naming, and keyboard shortcuts.
The RuneScape Connection
While the game is set within its own world rather than Gielinor, the ‘A RuneScape Adventure’ subtitle is a nod to the partnership between the developer and the RuneScape team. According to the announcement, the game captures the ‘Scapey spirit’—focusing on skill-based progression, community-driven development, and a player-first philosophy. Notably, the game is set to maintain a no-microtransaction model, ensuring all progress is earned through gameplay.
Why it matters
For players, Melvor Idle 2 represents a significant step up in complexity for the idle genre. With the inclusion of an in-game mod manager, current action tracking, and an integrated event log, the game is leaning heavily into providing granular control over progression. This makes it an ideal pick for both busy players who need an offline-capable title and dedicated completionists who want to push their efficiency to the limit.
The game is officially launching into Early Access on November 17, 2026. Prospective players can head to Steam to wishlist the title now. Fans should keep an eye out for further updates, as the developers have promised a roadmap of consistent updates, expansions, and open development based on community feedback.
