Capcom is looking to address long-standing player feedback with the newly announced Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance expansion, set to arrive in 2027. Following the base game’s launch, which faced some criticism for its streamlined difficulty and PC performance issues, the development team is using the expansion to evolve the experience, specifically targeting the endgame and core challenge levels that series veterans have been calling for.

Elevating the Endgame with Master Rank

One of the most significant changes coming with Ascendance is the return of Master Rank difficulty. Game director Takuro Hiraoka emphasized that the team is aware of community concerns regarding resource generosity and difficulty levels. By reintroducing Master Rank, Capcom aims to restore the series’ traditional high-stakes loop where crafting specific gear sets for specific elemental challenges becomes essential for survival. This shift is designed to ensure players feel a genuine progression as they tackle increasingly difficult quests.

New Combat Mechanics and Vertical Terrain

The expansion introduces the Skybound Eyrie, a new, more vertical, and visually complex area that deviates from the base game’s maps like the Windward Plains. To navigate these new challenges and face tougher enemies—such as the coordinated attacks from the Araketa—hunters are getting a new tool: the Boost Bracer. This ability allows players to activate a temporary phase that supercharges weapon combos and strikes. While this addition will likely spark debate among fans regarding the game’s evolving speed, Capcom describes it as a key part of their “true evolution” for the title.

The story of Ascendance fast-forwards several years following the restoration of the Windward Plains. After the return of the elder dragon Lao-Shan Lung, the guild base is destroyed, prompting hunters to regroup with improved gear to explore the skies. With this major update, the team hopes to build upon the foundation of Wilds to create a more robust experience for both newcomers and longtime fans.
