The debate over the future of physical media continues to heat up, as new sales data for Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine highlights a significant player preference for boxed copies. According to sales data from Ampere and GSD, the title saw 35% of its total launch sales attributed to physical discs, a figure that suggests collectors are still heavily invested in owning their games on a tangible format.

Regional Discrepancies in Sales

The data reveals that regional habits play a massive role in how these games move. While the global average sat at 35%, the European market saw an even higher demand for physical media, with 51% of launch sales coming from boxed versions. However, the breakdown is far from uniform across individual markets. In the UK, players leaned heavily toward convenience with two-thirds of sales being digital. Conversely, France saw the opposite trend, with more than two-thirds of players opting for physical discs.

The Future of PlayStation Discs

This performance comes at a time when Sony is actively preparing to exit the physical market. Earlier this year, the company confirmed that it would stop producing PS5 game discs for titles launching after January 2028. While Sony maintains it will “cautiously move forward” with this plan, the move has drawn significant backlash from the community. Industry analysts, including Joost van Dreunen, have pointed to this data as proof that consumer sentiment toward physical ownership remains high, noting that there is a deep-seated human need to collect that digital-only storefronts don’t fully satisfy.

Why it matters

For the average gamer, this data serves as a reminder that the shift toward a digital-only future is not as universally embraced as corporate roadmaps might suggest. Former PlayStation US boss Shawn Layden highlighted that while the “faithful” collector base might represent a smaller percentage of the total user base, they are the most dedicated and loyal customers—the kind who buy multiple copies of releases to preserve them in original packaging.

If you are a physical media collector, these figures suggest that major publishers will continue to face pushback as they phase out disc production. While the industry is clearly looking to transition away from physical manufacturing by 2028, the high attachment rate for major PS5 releases like Wolverine shows that players are still voting with their wallets to keep disc drives relevant.
