Competitive gaming thrives on intense focus and high-stakes strategy, but one Pokémon professional is asking his fellow competitors to prioritize basic hygiene after a recent event took a nauseating turn. Following the 2027 Baltimore Pokémon Regional Championships held earlier this month, player Donghun Youm took to social media to call out peers for failing to meet standard hygiene expectations, claiming a “putrid” smell from a nearby player was so severe it caused him to vomit.

An Unpleasant Competitive Environment

Youm’s account of the event, posted on X on September 27, highlighted the struggle of maintaining concentration during a high-pressure match when environmental conditions—in this case, an intense odor—become overwhelming. “My friends and I couldn’t focus that round due to how putrid the smell was and we even told a judge due to it,” Youm wrote. The report brought fresh attention to long-standing complaints about personal hygiene within various gaming and Trading Card Game (TCG) communities, where crowded, indoor tournament spaces can quickly become uncomfortable.

A Recurring Issue in Competitive Scenes

This incident is not an isolated one in the wider landscape of esports and gaming culture. Similar complaints have surfaced in communities ranging from Super Smash Bros. to Yu-Gi-Oh!, where tournament organizers have occasionally had to address hygiene concerns to keep matches running smoothly. Social media reactions to Youm’s post were swift, with many commenters expressing disbelief that such basic self-care remains a hurdle at organized events. Despite the distraction and the physical toll, Youm managed to secure a 60th-place finish at the Baltimore event with a 9-4 record.

Why it matters

For players attending large-scale regional or international tournaments, this serves as a blunt reminder that the shared physical space of a convention center requires mutual respect. When hygiene standards slip, it doesn’t just make an event unpleasant; it actively compromises the competitive integrity of the game by forcing players to deal with physical discomfort instead of focusing on their strategy. While organizers have protocols for sportsmanship, player behavior regarding personal presentation remains a consistent friction point. If you are planning to attend upcoming competitive circuits, basic hygiene is not just a social courtesy—it is a requirement for a fair and functional gaming environment for everyone at the table.
