RGG Studio’s upcoming brawler, Stranger Than Heaven, is taking a player-friendly approach to its demanding combat mechanics by including optional assist features. According to an IGN interview with producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto at Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2026, the team is implementing these tools to ensure players of all skill levels can experience the full story.

Combat Adjustments for Every Player

The game’s combat, which relies heavily on precise parrying and reading attack animations, initially drew concerns for potentially being too punishing compared to previous RGG titles. Sakamoto confirmed that the developer has fine-tuned control responsiveness and difficulty balance based on feedback from demo sessions. To bridge the gap, the game will feature various difficulty levels and specific “cheat” items. These items provide tangible perks, such as automatic health regeneration, and can even simplify combat encounters so that players can progress using basic inputs.

While the developers aim to make the game accessible, they haven’t forgotten about veteran players. Sakamoto noted that the highest difficulty setting is designed to be “extremely challenging,” catering to those looking for a punishing, high-stakes experience. The studio also plans to include a lengthy tutorial phase early in the game to help players get comfortable with the new mechanics.

A Cheeky Penalty for Using Assistance

True to the studio’s signature style, there is a catch for those who rely on these assist items. These “cheats” are equipped as garments, meaning they will be visually apparent on your character model. As Sakamoto pointed out, anyone viewing your gameplay will know you are using these handicaps, preventing players from masquerading as expert parriers while using the assistance items.

Why it matters

For fans who are primarily invested in RGG Studio’s deep narratives and eccentric side activities, these options mean you won’t be locked out of the experience by a steep difficulty curve. Whether you prefer a cinematic flow or a brutal, test-of-skill combat experience, the game is being built to scale accordingly.

Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to launch on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Players should watch for these accessibility features upon launch to tailor their playthrough to their preferred challenge level.
