Sucker Punch Productions, the studio behind the Ghost of Tsushima franchise, has reportedly undergone a round of layoffs affecting 24 employees. The news, first reported by Aftermath and shared via GamesIndustry.biz, follows the recent launch of the Ghost of Yōtei: Complete Edition.
Behind the decision
According to an internal email obtained by Aftermath, the studio attributed the staffing reductions to current market challenges and a review of the team’s requirements for its upcoming projects. The email acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, stating, “We know this is a lot to take in, and we want to assure you that we did not make this decision lightly.” The studio noted that it is working to support those affected during the transition and plans to share more details regarding the future of the studio next week. Sony Interactive Entertainment has been contacted for comment.
Commercial performance context
This development comes despite the significant commercial success of Ghost of Yōtei. Since its release last October, the title sold 3.3 million copies within its first month, outpacing the performance of its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, during the same timeframe. Data from GSD highlighted that Yōtei served as Sony’s largest first-party PlayStation launch in Europe and provided a boost to Sony’s Q3 earnings, which saw a 6% increase in digital and add-on content revenue. Following the main release, the team has been actively updating the game, including the addition of a multiplayer mode in March and the recent rollout of a complete edition featuring a new single-player narrative expansion.
Why it matters
For players, this news highlights the ongoing instability within the games industry, even among teams behind commercially successful, high-profile titles. While Ghost of Yōtei has achieved strong sales and continued support, the reality of market shifts continues to impact developers behind our favorite games.
As the studio looks toward its next project, players should keep an eye on Sucker Punch’s official announcements in the coming weeks. While there is no current indication that ongoing support for Ghost of Yōtei or future game development will be halted, these shifts often signal changes in production pipelines and project scope.
