The long-awaited next-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has officially arrived, and it is already making a massive impact on the game’s longevity. Just hours after the remastered edition launched, the title broke its all-time concurrent player record on Steam, proving that Geralt of Rivia still holds a powerful grip on the gaming community over seven years after his initial release.

Setting a New High Water Mark

According to data from SteamDB, the previous peak for The Witcher 3 was set in January 2020, reaching 103,329 concurrent players coinciding with the debut of the Witcher TV series on Netflix. The remastered edition has already surged past that milestone, hitting a new peak of 114,696 players. This represents a staggering 258% increase compared to the previous month, where the game maintained a steady base of approximately 31,959 players.

Performance and Technical Updates

CD Projekt Red’s comprehensive update introduces a variety of technical enhancements, including modernized graphics, refined animations for Roach, and the addition of demanding features like path tracing for high-end hardware. While the launch saw minor friction for players running AMD graphics cards, a driver update was quickly released to address those compatibility issues. The developers have bundled all previously released expansions into this edition, providing a complete package for both returning veterans and newcomers entering the world of the Continent for the first time.

Why it matters

For players, this massive influx of activity signals a vibrant ecosystem for one of the most celebrated RPGs in history. Because the update is provided as a free download for existing owners, the barrier to entry is virtually non-existent for those who already have the game in their library, leading to a significant spike in community engagement.

As the weekend approaches, these player numbers are expected to climb even higher as more fans find time to dive into the enhanced visuals and gameplay tweaks. Players should monitor their system’s performance, as the new graphical settings—particularly path tracing—require significant hardware resources. While these specific Steam numbers only track PC users, the remaster is also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, suggesting that the total global player count across all platforms is substantially higher than the figures reported on Valve’s platform alone.
