Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider: Catalyst has a release window. Embracer Group, the parent company of the developer, said in mid-August 2026 that Catalyst is planned for its fiscal year 2027/28, which runs from April 1, 2027 to March 31, 2028. There is no exact day yet, but the update gives the clearest picture so far of when the next new Lara Croft adventure will arrive.

What Catalyst is

Catalyst is a brand-new Tomb Raider adventure rather than a remake. Set in the aftermath of a mythical cataclysm, it takes Lara Croft to Northern India, where ancient secrets have been uncovered and mysterious guardian forces have awakened. Rival treasure hunters are also in the region, and Lara has to stop powerful forces from falling into the wrong hands.

The game is built on Unreal Engine 5 and is described as having the largest world in the series to date. Crystal Dynamics is putting the focus on vertical exploration, traversal, puzzles and discovery across mountains, deserts, jungles and ruins. Platforms have not been detailed in the latest update.

Two Tomb Raider games in about a year

Catalyst is one of two Tomb Raider games in active development at Crystal Dynamics. Both were revealed at The Game Awards in December 2025. The other is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the original 1996 Tomb Raider co-developed with Flying Wild Hog. Legacy of Atlantis launches on February 12, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.

That puts two major Tomb Raider releases within roughly a year of each other, with the remake first and the new adventure following sometime between spring 2027 and early 2028.

Why the gap matters for the series

Crystal Dynamics has been working to rebuild momentum for the series since the Survivor trilogy, which ran from 2013 to Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018. The long wait since then has been filled by collections and remasters, so Catalyst is the first genuinely new mainline adventure in years. Having two projects in development suggests a broader strategy to keep Lara Croft in the spotlight rather than returning every five years.

More details about Catalyst’s gameplay, platforms and exact date are expected as the release window gets closer, likely after Legacy of Atlantis has launched. Until then, anything claiming a specific day should be treated as rumor.

Why it matters

For fans, the confirmation is a concrete step: Catalyst now has an official year-long window instead of an open-ended “in development” label. The safe expectation is a release in 2027 or early 2028.

For players who want to get into the series before then, Legacy of Atlantis in February 2027 is the natural starting point, and the Survivor trilogy remains widely available on current platforms.
